I just [chat] in your arms tonight....

It must have been something you said...

The flavor really does last a long time.

  3. So I was reading up on why the Xbox 360 apparently gets really hot and then stops working, and one of the problems found was:

    • The cooling fan was half of desktop PCs — apparently to reduce noise.

That's not a problem, that's good good sense.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Except in situations where the problems of heat > problems of noise.

Flowing air results in noise. It's one of those things that let us know that this is not the best of all possible worlds. But when working with electronics if you're too stubborn to use a peltier cooler because of the "if the current switches then you set the process on fire" problem then you are stuck with water or air.

I'm all for water cooling. I think it's sensible. You hook your computer up to the ice maker in your freezer and you're good to go. But since people don't like using water cooling we're stick with blowing air across things.

As you and I have discussed, fans do not create cool. Fans just move air. So if there is a 90 degree closed room and a fan is put into it the room will remain 90 degrees. So fans only work in their capacity to move air, which causes noise.

So I think that in many situations with regard to problems Fire > Noise.

  5. ... it's because losers were complaining that their 360s were making too much noise. Easy fix for that? turn up the volume on the tv...

on a side note, my arms feel dirty now.

  7. An 8 Gig iPod Nano is $249.

So, really, an iPhone is only $351 if you consider it to be an 8 gig iPod Nano and a phone.

Now I need to explain away the $1440 service charge over two years....

    ReplyDelete
  8. I was being facetious with that fan thing. I probably should have made it obvious, but I was trying to declare solidarity with the Xbox engineers since I too fell into the trap of silencing a fan at the cost of stability.

  10. Sarcasm is lost on the internet. Mostly because it's sooooo hard to tell when someone is being sarcastic.

In other news not letting minors buy violent games in California is unconstitutional

  11. I found a Hyundai Tiburon in the parking lot of a bank that I thought was neat and could serve as my next car. I priced it online and on in its condition is around $7,000ish.

The manager of the bank just called me back. He's hoping to get around $13,000 for it because "It's not that beat up."

It needs new tires, new brakes, and has dings and minor paint scrapes around it, including a ding in the middle of the hood...which...isn't the sort of place in which a car gets dings.

So that was a fun dream while it lasted. I have about a 11% desire to try and talk him down...but getting to $6,000 from $13,000 would require far more effort than I'm willing to put forth, if only because I would have to explain to him how car values work which, ironically, isn't something I understand.

  13. Mrs. Winslow just told cousin Clarence (who smokes, steals cars, and gets Eddie and Steve in trouble) that he's not cool, because coolness means respect and honesty and some other things that he doesn't have, and I think what she meant to say is that he IS cool, but he's not remotely virtuous. Trying to redefine cool probably isn't going to accomplish much.

And apparently they just gave up on Clarence (he's being sent home) and are focusing on Eddie, because at least he accepted his punishment.

  14. Homer: So, I realized that being with my family is more important than being cool.

Bart: Dad, what you just said was powerfully uncool.

Homer: You know what the song says: "It's hip to be square".

Lisa: That song is so lame.

Homer: So lame that it's... cool?

    Bart+Lisa: No.

    Marge: Am I cool, kids?

    Bart+Lisa: No.

Marge: Good. I'm glad. And that's what makes me cool, not caring, right?

    Bart+Lisa: No.

Marge: Well, how the hell do you be cool? I feel like we've tried everything here.

Homer: Wait, Marge. Maybe if you're truly cool, you don't need to be told you're cool.

    Bart: Well, sure you do.

Lisa: How else would you know?

  15. So, the new catalog is almost done. I'm trying to figure out how to translate it into a website....

My head all is be exploding. This makes Roscoe's "I'll sort my Magic Cards into binders by color > Creature / Spell" seem like some sort of inspired plan.

    ReplyDelete
  16. pdfs, my friend pdfs. Copy and paste.. rinse, repeat.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'm thinking. Right now there is a seperate page for every item, sometimes, and then there is the duplication of information and bla and bla and bla.

If they want the website to be the catalog I may just put up the PDF pages...that does make a lot of sense.

The problem, I think, is that they'll want the website to contain more information than the catalog....

    BLECK

  18. So, I read over my post in another forum about rules for the star wars game...and...well...let's see what you all think:

I still think legitimate concerns are raised in our anal-ness.

Anal is good. Anal makes things tighter. If players aren't anal then lots of things become too lose and arguments arise for which there are no answers.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Did I just read a post about Star Wars or butt sex, and will I ever be able to tell the difference again?

  20. ... Jay, Stop Drinking. You know I am your stanchest ally in the fight against the remaining spirits... but.. you're typing like Mikey.

  22. I had Burger King for lunch today. Usually I go home and eat a salad. Today I had a haircut so I went to Burger King.

Never again. My tummy keeps making poop.

  23. This morning the person around my age who works in here asked me what my hours are.

Him: "So, you work till 5 every day?"
    Me: "Yup"
Him: "And come in around 9?"
    Me: "Usually."
    Him: "So...are you full time?"
    Me: "I'm not entirely sure."

I didn't have the heart to tell him that I just come in around 45-50 minutes late every day because "Fuck it" that's why.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Have you ever considered that YOU might have the delicate stomach, and not I, Jay?

just a thought... as everything makes you poop. and leads you to utter Never Again.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 9-5 is eight hours, right? 9-10-11-12-1-2-3-4-5....

So.. officially, you're full time.. just ... lenient full time?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Don't really know. Don't really care.

  27. Man, html was straightforward and simple.

Why the crap did someone have to invent java?

    ReplyDelete
  28. because html is only a markup language and is incapable of applying logic to data.

    ReplyDelete
  29. You're incapable of applying logic and data!

I've been thinking about it...and I really like your idea of using .pdf documents.

Each page of the catalog is about 247 KB, which would be on average only 100 or so KB larger than a website page with pictures. And since all they want is the new catalog online and since any product page I created would just be a copy of the new catalog...I can just print off each catalog page as a PDF..put the files up, link to them, and declare myself "done".

I mean, all of the pages are already practically copies of the catalog page anyway. And if there are any updates we can put them on a new section of the website that would record changes. So in that way updating the website on those changes would also update the catalog, not directly, but if somsone used the catalog and got on the site they could see any of the updates...

I like this idea. And all of our product is on the Online Store. The replacement parts are on the Online Store. So there's no reason to have duplication...

Now I just need to formulate this into a Jeff-proof argument.

  30. I'm playing Final Fantasy X again (after about five years), and I'm collecting Celestial Weapons and hidden summons against my will, which has started me wondering why I cheerfully volunteer to do certain things in games, then flatly refuse to do other, similar things.

    Good sidequests / hidden features:

    1. You can figure them out without a guide because the game gives you hints IN GAME. Not in the manual, not in the OVA that came out in Korea only, not on their website, and for god's sake not in a strategy guide.

    2. To get what you want, you do what you're doing, but more, aka level up. This can also be applied to multi-level optional dungeons. Once you hit the first floor, you can pretty much bet that there's something great on level 100. None of this open certain chests in a certain order and the fiftieth chest will have a picture of god which you take to Jesus and he'll give you a flower that you plant at Belthemfotep's grave and recieve the water of life which unlocks the ultimate weapon. Fuck that, just let me go down your stupid dungeon.

    3. Let me stop pursuing a goal to go pursue another goal, then resume going after the first goal. In other words, let me leave the 100 lvl dungeon when I want and let me come back. It's a pipe-dream for most games, but I appreciate it when it happens.

    4. Keep blind random chance to a minimum. I know Baal won't drop a Grandfather just because you kill him, but he might, and that's random but not necessarily blind. Collecting cards in Castlevania: Circle of the Moon is blind random because some specific and unknown monsters carry cards and have a random chance to drop them, so you don't know who to kill or what they have. I hate that.

So in other words, I'll level up to 9999 in Disgaea because all I need to do is kill a bunch of monsters to get there, and I'll get all the souls in Aria of Sorrow, because every monster will eventually drop one, and I'll get the best sword Disgaea because it's on floor 100 of a dungeon. I can figure out and do these things without some stupid programmer trying to bend reality to prevent it.

Final Fantasy X makes you do retarded ass shit and I'm not doing it. Ever.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Excellent position to maintain.

I say go one step further and let me put the game on auto-play. Because if I've shown that I can defeat Baal 25 times in a row then, presumably, I can beat Baal nigh-every time. So let me make a little macro to do Baal runs all night and let me reap the benefits.

What virtue is there in making someone sit there for the totality of the playtime? I made the character, I found the strategy, now let me put it on auto.

That's one of the things that bugs me in games. Like pokemon. I know what i need to do, so let me tell the game that and then the game can just run itself through that little path I already know. I'm not going to go kill 150 fuckint rattataas to level up my Health IP, but I know that to level up my Health IP i need to kill 150 rattattas. So let me tell you that I know what to do, and then you do it for me while I go do something else. Then when it's done I can come back and go on from there.

    ReplyDelete
  32. That's also one of the things that bugs me about life. I know what I need to do. So now let me get someone else to actually do it and then let me reap the benefit.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think that's why I like philosophy. In philosophy all one needs to know is what to do and how to do it. There's no actual doing involved.
