Roger Friedman's Cloverfield Controversy

The best controversy is the fabricated controversy; the controversy which comes into being through the rantings of a jackass with a soapbox. Without these controversies we as a nation might have to tackle actual problems and actual controversies that truly affect people's lives. Luckily for us there are people in the world like Roger Friedman, a jackass with a Fox News provided soapbox.

You see, while everyone else was dismissing Cloverfield as a stupid Blair Witch knockoff Roger Friedman had the clarity and sense of purpose required to see Cloverfield for what it really is: An insult to the memory of 9/11:

"But Cloverfield also inadvertently disses New York for what happened on Sept. 11, 2001, by re-enacting scenes of buildings exploding and massive clouds of debris for fun and profit."

You see, by setting a disaster movie in New York City (a first, for sure) and then destroying buildings in New York City (again, an unprecidented feat in cinema) Cloverfield is commenting on 9/11 and insensitively mocking its memory. Because any building exploding in New York is somehow related to 9/11, so says Roger Friedman.

Then there is the notion of turning a profit off of the memory of 9/11. Yes, because Cloverfield is trying to profit off 9/11 whereas a movie such as, oh I don't know, World Trade Center was not. I'd love to hear an explanation of the arbitrary line that makes World Trade Center a beautiful piece of Americana and Cloverfield an opportunistic, insensitive monstrosity.

But the most endearing part of the article has to be this:

"Does no one recall what was said following the World Trade Center disasters? There was such sensitivity about the huge human losses that images of the Twin Towers were erased from movie posters and excised from films.

Yet six years later, the "Cloverfield" gang is cool enough with it to show New York being pulverized. Very quickly and without warning, downtown New York is destroyed. The first bit of damage is depicted by a World Trade Center-like structure exploding and collapsing downward, sending off a cloud not unlike those my friends ran from that day."

These two paragraphs have everything. They are a literary Smörgåsbord of vapid rhetorical shit. The hurt emo pleading of, "does no one recall?", the vastly inflated "huge human losses" because, yeah, New York couldn't stand to lose 5,000 people (I totally just went there), the imagery of the phrase "images of the Twin Towers", and the cherry on the top, the personal note of "my friends ran from that day". It would send shivers down my spine if it didn't send bile to my throat.

The problem, though, is the beginning of the second paragraph: "six years later"

Look, you obsessed shitrag with your psychologically enfeebled peon followers: Get THE FUCK over it. And if you can't get over it; if you're going to spend the rest of your life emoing yourself out over something that happened in 2001? Then do us all a favor and just slit your damn wrists now while you listen to The Cure.

Because healthy human beings, reasonable people, get over things. We deal with it. We move on. If you spend your entire life drawing labored comparisons to that time some planes hit a building in 2001 you're never going to develop as a human being; you'll be stuck in a state of arrested development forever incapable of actualizing your full potential. You'll be a perpetual child.

Grow the fuck up.

I'm not saying that Cloverfield is a good movie or that it is beyond critique. But it's not a fucking commentary on 9/11. It's a monster movie set in New York because, dipshit, New York is a great setting for movies.

Was The Day After Tomorrow out of line when it froze New York?

Was the King Kong remake incredibly insensitive when it placed a Monkey in New York?

Was Spider Man insulting the memory of those brave souls who lost their lives on 9/11 by covering New York in webbing?

No?

Then shut the god damned fuck up you whiny little bitch.

  1. I think the greatest 9/11 defamation movies of all time had to be the Ghostbusters movies. You know for a fact that they wanted to absolutely shame New York for 9/11 by walking a giant marshmallow man through the city, and possibly worse, walking a giant Statue of Liberty robot through the city. And the possessing of the city with ghosts was to only there to devalue those lives lost on that fateful day.

Is it so hard for people to understand that New York city itself is a representative for the United States, as much as Tokyo is a representative of Japan. When Godzilla attacks Tokyo, he is attacking japan. When the cloverfield monster attacks New York, he is in effect attacking the US. And, yes, even when those extremist muslims flew the planes into the towers they were figuratively attacking the entire country. New York city is the most reasonable location for a US monster film, so get over it.

  2. You also have to remember that in Ghost Busters II the Statue of Liberty could not walk until they coated the insides with ecto plasm. This is obviously a statement that the United States itself is not capable of foreward momentum without a liberating agent.

Also, the song which spurred the slime to motion was "Higher and Higher", obviously a drug reference.

  5. I enjoy LoL J.J. Abramses.

Ghostbusters II really lacked the discipline and artistic integrity seen in Ghostbusters I.

    ReplyDelete
  6. It also included a near-lethal dose of Bobby Brown.

    ReplyDelete
  7. That's because GB Double Dose lacked that which made Ghostbusters special.

Namely, the Art of the Grift.

It is possible the Art was removed to make room for the Bobby Brown. If so, clearly, it was a mistake.

Really, all it needed, and all we need for Ghostbusters 3 was and is a con-off between the Ghost King of Hoboes and one Peter Venkman .

    it was kinda wonderful

like - not (post)ironically good either, but actually really good.

  10. it took to flawed Blare Witch and
    1) made is scary
    2) had a budget, so there were effects
    3) the film was able to capture the fear and confusion of a disaster without being cliche. Or any more cliche than any other movie.
    4) it uses naturalistic sound design. There is only music when the camera is near a radio. So, once the power goes out, the music stops. The monster screen is fucking wonderful. Generally, the sound in the film is oppressive. It is safe to say that sound HURTS.
    5) the film was able to be evocative 9/11 without outing being overt. Right at the near the beginning of the film the monster knocks down the Empire State Building. Just like when the World Trade Centers fell, the streets filled with a fuck-ton of dirt. This was perhaps the best effect in the film.
    6) no happy ending. everyone fucking dies at the end.

  11. but what about the monster? does he die too?

    ReplyDelete
  12. err - well - the film seems to end with the nuking on NYC. That, however, does not mean that it worked.

so - i am going to say no. The monster is not dead.

  13. So, Cloverfield. SPOILERS OH EM GEE SPOILERS STOP READING NOW SPOILERS

The movie knows how to make scale work, which is something a lot of monster movies get wrong, in my opinion. These things should be shot from street level, with aerial shots only when it makes sense to include them (from a high building, helicopter, whatever), the point is, the monster only looks huge if the people look normal size, and the point of view is locked into what people could see. As soon as the camera flies up to see from the monster's level, the illusion is broken and now there's essentially a guy in a rubber suit stomping around a tiny city. Cloverfield is told from a human POV, and the monster benefits greatly from it.

The part of the movie I sort of object to is the strict adherence to the telling of the story by people who have no knowledge of the monster and who interact with people who are similarly ignorant. There's no bizarre cult of worshipers to interview or obtain artifacts from, no necronomicon to consult for clues, no knowing insider who has already done research, in short, no authority who is able to shed any sort of light onto what is going on. That's what happens, I suppose, when the POV is locked onto the street-level witnesses and chaos is a major player.

The only real clue we have, I think, is the thing that falls into the bay in the April 27 video of Coney Island or wherever the hell they went. I'm assuming it's one of the spawn that takes the underground and shrieks and gurgles at people. If it is, then I would further assume that each of the spawn that were not killed could potentially grow into the larger monster.

But there's no one in the movie who really knows anything, so all we can do is try to figure out what happened, just like the characters, which is an interesting approach.

    ReplyDelete
  14. i guess if i had to be a nit-picky nerd, i would say we saw TOO much of the monster.

I think it would of been better if they would never got into the helicopter near the end.

so my burning question for you adam, did the monster live?

and i guess - after the amount of money that the film made this weekend, what will the sequal look like - because they can't do the POV thing again. That would be even to hacky for the hack JJ Abrams.

    ReplyDelete
  15. this has not been noted in the past, at least here - but the guy who wrote cloverfield wrote a bunch of Buffy episodes in the last season, including Jay's favorite episode "Lies My Parents Told Me"

    ReplyDelete
  16. also - the best episode of Angel - Why we Fight

which takes place on a world war II submarie. And for those keeping score- is more accurate a movie than U571

    ReplyDelete
  17. I can't think of any convincing reason why the monster would have died, so I'm fairly certain that it (or its spawn) survived.

As for a sequel, I hope there isn't one. Mankind and civilization apparently survived long enough for the tape to reach the Department of Defense, suggesting that even if the monster didn't die, it was possible for some people to escape from or in some way travel to and from Central Park post-bombing. This all, I think, supports the possibility of a last push of humanity against the monster(s), which could serve as an excuse for a sequel, but for a movie that makes something of a point of withholding information, introducing another hour and a half of material would probably only dilute the potency of Cloverfield.

If I were doing a sequel, and there was a gun to my head and all that, I'd make the monster from Cloverfield the harbinger of the true horror from the stars which would emerge from behind the veil of reality; to whom the destruction of all civilization would be a trivial and not even necessarily a physical act. His very existence would dissolve the connective tissue that holds the human mind together, and in our panicked madness the concept of civilization, of human allegiances, and even the slightest trace of social morality would be set adrift in the sea of insanity which would drown us all.

And the story would be told entirely through Facebook tagged photos.

  18. I heart Lies My Parents Told Me. It's so good.

I feel as if I need to see Cloverfield now.

  19. Why is the movie called "Cloverfield"?

    ReplyDelete
  20. from Wiki

The film was titled Cloverfield from the beginning, but the title changed throughout production before it was finalized as the original title. Matt Reeves explained that the title was changed frequently due to the hype caused by the teaser trailer, "That excitement spread to such a degree that we suddenly couldn't use the name anymore. So we started using all these names like Slusho and Cheese.[15] And people always found out what we were doing!" The director said that "Cloverfield" was the government's case designate for the monster, comparing the titling to that of the Manhattan Project. "And it's not a project per se. It's the way that this case has been designated. That's why that is on the trailer, and it becomes clearer in the film. It's how they refer to this phenomenon [or] this case," said the director.[16] The film's final title, "Cloverfield", is the name of the freeway exit and airport near Abrams's Santa Monica office.

He continually kept preaching about this. I most certainly will send this
information to him. Pretty sure he'll have a very good read. Many thanks for sharing!
