[chat] would like to eat your brains

Yesterday I came across a video of Jonathan Coulton singing his wonderful song "re: Your Brains" at PAX its a really great video, but the audio sort of sucks, so I'm just going to post the link. In its place i bring you a much cleaner version.

enjoy

I tend to think that it's a good thing to pick a resolution and build towards that when doing website work. So if a person picks 1024x768 they design pages to be viewed at 1024x768.

The people for whom I work tend to think that everything ought to be different depending on what they want it to be at that moment.

This causes conflict.

Also, I freaking hate having to add little, "click on the image to view the shit" reminders whenever I use an image as a link. So I added this:

(To view catalog, click on the catalog image. Also, remember to continually breathe to ensure maximum oxygen consumption. Additionally, do not eat your mouse or bang your head on your desk as these pose serious health risks.)

this is why I hate web development. No consistency between users. I agree you should choose a standard and stick with it.

I hate web development because it's boring and needless.

There was a guy who contracted for Hanover who is a friend of John's from Rose Hulman, Lige. He makes html with transparent pixel images in and around tables and browser size relative dimensions so that everything is always somehow where it ought to be.

_J_ said...

Does that work for widescreen / non-widescreen viewing? I can use tables to keep things somewhat where they ought to be, but I still haven't figured out a way to make a page look the same on widescreen and not-widescreen monitors

Floating div elements with percentage sizing are used to make a site look relative. My problem is that there is always that one dumb asshole who refuses to increase their resolution beyond 800 x 600 with their piece of shit laptop with a 10" screen.

When you try to size relatively, cases such as this break the mold. There is only so much data you can stuff into a space, and when that limit is exceeded, everything looks just plain awful. Which is why I prefer to build a website to a consistent standard with static sizings such that someone that lives beyond the edge case can still easily view the website, but will be merely forced to use the sliding bars to see parts of it that their resolution/monitor cannot cover.

Yeah. That's why I design to 1024x768. If someone is using a resolution below that they can go fuck themselves.

So I'm taking 4th year Japanese this year and I think I might hate how the professor planned the course. In the first week we read a couple of stories which we found about as difficult to get through as, say, I Love Rock and Roll on Medium. A few mis-steps, but never any real danger of failure.

Now it's week two, and he has us playing goddamned Frankenstein on Expert and we enjoy only staccato'd glimpses of success in what is otherwise a symphony of failure.

I think he thinks that he's using the "rise to the challenge" theory of teaching people to do things, and after a few hours of labor, it IS possible to understand what's going on, but I believe that learning a language (or really pretty much anything) is like putting sprinkles on frosted donuts, and if you put just a light coating on each one, most of the sprinkles will stick. This guy tears open a bag of them and just dumps them on, and practically everything falls off. In other words, let's add a few things at a time and then eventually arrive at a place where we can read these stories instead of trying to skip right to them.

Oh well. Maybe in a few months I'll be thanking him, I don't know.

Also, it might be fun to have text on a website that says "Click to enlarge" and all it does is increase the size of the font.

Or maybe have a label that says "Click to enlittle", and it lets you view a 250x250 image at more like 25x25. Fun Fact: According to the OED, "ensmall" is a (rarely used) word (antonym of enlarge).

And maybe there's a way to have random words on each page highlighted, and reloading the page would reroll which words they were. I bet this would make someone very happy because I think his mind works precisely the same way as a randomized computer program, so every time he looked, the exact words he'd want emphasized would be there in yellow! Amazing!

Is the 4th year supposed to be a steady increase from the work of 3rd year? Or has he gone from 3rd year to something resembling 7th year?

Yesterday someone wanted me to add highlights to a word on a page, so when they moused over it there would be a white shadow surrounding the word, kind of like the pictures on the homepage.

I don't think they even think through their requests anymore. I think they're just trying to think of things to have me do for the sake of having me do them.

4th year SHOULD be the next step from 3rd year, but this guy hates linear progression or something. He's told us several times that he used to teach 3rd year, but they kicked him out for being too demanding and made him teach (the optional) fourth year. Lucky us.

Demanding isn't necessarily bad. Demanding with a dick at the helm is terrible.

So for Japanese Majors only 3 years are required? That seems a bit odd.

Pam is kinda sorta single

I'm not actually a Japanese major, I'm an East Asian Languages and Cultures (Japanese Focus) major, which needs 3 years of Japanese language, and a bunch of history and literature or something.

I just looked up the degree requirements to make sure about the 3 years thing, and discovered that my Latin counted towards my generic "foreign language" requirement...unexpectedly. Graduating is complicated.

_J_ said...

Graduating is also a trap.

Caleb said...

I asked you not to do it.

_J_ said...

True.

Stupid Graduation.
