WoW 3.0.2 Patch Notes: Laughing my Balls Off

So, Blizzard released some information regarding the 3.0.2 patch. After getting about halfway through the post I laughed my balls off. So, I thought you all might enjoy knowing why.

Blizzard is changing the way Buffs and Debufs stack in raids. Previously, certain buffs only affected members of one's 5 person party and not the raid as a whole. Upon the release of 3.0.2 buffs will affect the entire raid. The reasoning behind this is "We want players to be able to form raids and parties based on who they want to play with, rather than who has the correct talents and abilities to min-max their raid performance." So, rather than put a Shamman in every caster group to give those casters Totem of Wrath now one shaman's totem will affect the entire raid. Which certainly sounds neat, until you see how they're balancing this.

There are thirty or so different categories into which buffs and debuffs fit. Here you will find a comprehensive list of the changes made broken down by category and which spells/talents are in that category.
In each category, you can only benefit from the most powerful spell granting that effect. For example, Fel Intelligence grants spirit and intellect, both weaker than Arcane Intellect and Divine Spirit. If a player has Fel Intelligence and receives a stronger Arcane Intellect buff, he will gain the intellect value from Arcane Intellect and the spirit value from Fel Intelligence.
This is the point at which I laughed my balls off.

To simplify raid composition, to enable players to "to be able to form raids and parties based on who they want to play with, rather than who has the correct talents and abilities to min-max their raid performance" Blizzard is creating a new definition of raid optimization, a new system of exclusion.

Think of it this way. Pre 3.0.2 Totem of Wrath affected only the 5 people in the casting shaman's party. With 3.0.2 Totem of Wrath will affect the entire raid. So, pre-3.0.2 raids who had more than 5 casters had to include an elemental shaman in each 5 person party which needed the buff. (which usually meant that 2 Elemental Shamans were ensured spots) With 3.0.2? Raids need only have ONE Totem of Wrath source, ONE Elemental Shaman. More than one is a waste of a spot. By reclassifying Buffs into 30 categories Blizzard has now created a new system of raid composition: Build a Raid which maximizes those 30 categories.

That's why I laughed my balls off. Blizzard wants to open raid compositions, remove barriers and allow more people in. But the system they made to do that LIMITS CHARACTER INCLUSION!

And that's completely ignoring the new automation system Blizzard is creating for mana regeneration abilities:
In addition to this change, we also needed to address the "mana battery" roles in a raid. The mana regeneration effect they grant is no longer limited to their own party, and it no longer depends on the amount of damage they deal. Each time they trigger the mana regeneration effect, 10 people in their raid group will receive a buff which causes them to regenerate 0.5% of their maximum mana each second. This buff, Replenishment, will be given preferentially to raid members with the lowest mana, but will re-evaluate which raid members receive it each time it is fired. Replenishment is provided by Shadow Priests, Survival Hunters, and Retribution Paladins.

Man, I can't fucking wait until my warlock gets the Replenishment buff over a healing priest. That will be spectacular!

Fucking Blizzard. "It works! LET'S BREAK IT!"

i don't get it.. if there is an exclusion, then there is an inclusion. the same for the other way around because it's a zero-sum game. are you saying you don't have confidence to get included in a group based on your people skills? because it will matter a lot if the class barrier is reduced. i don't see how it should worry you otherwise.

Ok, pretty much the poster is saying... "WTF?! This is a gay change." I'd rather have it the way it is now, ya know... O_o Why change something that doesn't need to be changed? Being a healer, I'd be pissed if some dps got the mana instead of me.
What the dps is outta mana and the healers are just alllmost outta mana? That means the dpsers get the mana and BOOM! Dead raid because no heals.
BTW, the commenting poster above me is a tard. =)

The first commenter made some good points, the poster is whining too much about Blizzard attempting to improve the game overall. Do you honestly think that if the new way of doing things is worse that it will stay that way? How long have you been playing WoW? Blizzard always improves and changes the game, if something doesn't work then it gets ditched or changed yet every time there's someone who crys about it. Get over it and grow up.

I hear Warhammer needs more people to bitch.

Honestly, I can see both sides of the argurment. However, we must all remember that there IS a beta taking place where people ARE raiding. So I can't imagine having the actual players of this new system complaining and blizzard sticking them with the middle finger and not changing anything. I would have to believe that by "but will re-evaluate which raid members receive it each time it is fired" they would like to write it off to target certain classes with certain builds first, i.e. healers. Furthermore, you can't complain that much about an exclusion of classes when your whole point is that there is a certain exclusion now that we are used to. So we exchange one form of exclusion for another. Whatever the complaints may be, we must all realize that TBC was a much different game than the original and look which game we're defending now... Wrath just continues to bring change that, at some point, will become the norm that everyone defends when the next expansion comes out. Just like everyone complains that their new shiny t6+ won't last forever, we can't deny the fact that everything can't remain the same if an expansion is to add and modify content to keep veteran playrs online and bring new players in.

why exclude anyone? 2 elemental shaman isn't a waste, I say as long as the person is geared right, you shouldn't NOT allow them to play just because of what they are ya know. Now as a Druid im wondering if this means my GotW will affect everyone with one reagent.

Anonymous said...

Well you COULD have only one Elemental Shaman and have all of the casters circle around him/her to take advantage of his/her various spell enhancement totems.

However if you are running Gruul all it takes is a nice Shatter or Cave In and suddenly all your casters are taken out in one fell swoop. Because the casters were all drawn to the totems like a moth to a bug zapper.

I do agree with you in that Blizzard is naive if they think that these changes will make everyone acceptable in a raid environment. The most important element in a raid will always be people who know what they are doing and can play their class effectively. Gear ups are easy. Finding cooperative and knowledgeable players is more of an Epic drop.

Wade said...

he guy who wrote this is an idiot.

First off you don't take a shaman along to a raid for his one totem. or buff.

It's either DPS or healing.

So by creating this new system you only need ONE shaman who will have that ONE talent for the totem. then you can have others focused on healing and DPS and you won't have to worry about anything.

The point here being this. Players like myself CAN'T STAND this Basement nerd Elite'st system.

For example.

Now a days... if you want to join a good raiding guild. You get forward to their website right? you take a gander on there website... and what's this? they aren't recruiting your class... oh no. To bad... right?

You can ONLY get in if you know someone on the inside. which is a direct mirror of getting a job out in the real world today anyway. Which is complete BS. Sometimes guilds even require you to go through a weeks long app process... Shoot i could get a real job faster then this.

I'm getting off topic here.. anyways. the point being. These elite guilds won't have any EXCUSES anymore to Deny someone entry into their elite'st raid.

What's wrong original poster, getting a little upset because things are becoming TO Casual for you???

with this new system everyone can go.

Wade is a dumb nigger that can't get a job. Bet you're voting Niggerbama.

I agree with Wade.

The fact that the classes are becoming a little closer in ability makes it so that it is more flexible. The situation the blogger stated IS true, on a competitive level...

But now for FRIENDS, yes MMORPG are usually played so you can play with friends contrary to popular belief. If you want to play with your friends, you can group with them in raids without sacrificing buffs. It just follows that they are making most classes able to spec to fill a role rather than reroll to fill a role.

If you compared it to other MMOs, it's always been a trend for... a Knight class to want to play a 'mage knight' or a caster to play 'mana shield fighter'... your limitations would be your class... but compared to the previous WoW versions, there is more flexibility now.

The heal bitch priest class is now able to be main DPS, other heal classes can heal better. Of course just like they should, a priest can out heal another class that tries to specialize in heal... a warrior can tank better than a druid or pally but the fact that the other classes can kinda fill a role they don't belong in is what makes a game more fun.

Blizzard does not make decisions out of single ideas, they actually do make logical decisions and change according to experimental data. They aren't god but they are smarter than most developers.

I'm not an american, but yes I'd vote black for pres...

What's the problem anonymous bitch?

Anonymous said...

I don't care what's going to happen with this. All that I know is that Retribution paladins will get a CC, a off-heal ability, and a mana-battery equal to the shadow priests. WotLK is going to kick ass.

I don't think many of you are catching the point of the new exclusivity argument that the OP is making. The point is that now you have 30 types of buff slots, and you have to maximize those thirty slots. So bringing two elemental shamans is a waste. Why? you may ask! Because now the second shaman's totem is sitting there rotting. The same with an enhancement shaman, that second windfury totem is completely useless.

This means:
You bring 1 of every buff class, so you won't find more than 1 boomkin, 1 ele shammy, 1 enh shammy, 1 SV hunter, etc. in any raid. Then you stack the rest with hard-hitting dps and healing. So now, instead of 2 locks, 2 mages, 1 boomkin, 2 ele shamans, you would bring 1 ele shaman, 1 boomkin, 3 locks, and two mages.

Do you now see the new exclusivity the OP is talking about? It is an exclusivity based on RAID buffs instead of PARTY buffs, the idea is the same, just with a changed scope. Now raid will be entirely stacked with pure dps / heals, and less utility classes. Sucks to be you if you are a utility class.

Not necessarily that I agree with the entire post, but you were all grossly missing the concept of the new exclusivity.

Wade said...

No no no... you see you idiots are MISSING the whole picture.. not the OP. THe OP is applying this change to WoW's OLD System.

You guys don't get it do you? WoW is being made EASIER to raid with... don't you get it? Raiding is EASIER to begin with period!

Look at Holy paladins for example... they are getting this ability to target someone I.E. (the main tank) and heal ANYONE they want. and it heals both the Main tank and that person... that's NOOB MODE.

Blizzard is making this game more casual, easier to do. Raiding will be easier..

and here's the problem with that for PEOPLE LIKE YOU.

YOu nerds like things complicated and complex. You like to # crunch things and have a perfect group. Why? i don't know.

this change is good, it's making the whole system easier...

I have done all of the raiding the game has to offer and I can handle anything the game throws at me.. but i gotta say the change is needed... and making the game easier is needed as well.

Enough is enough.

K well there must be a pile of druids posting here. Druids being able to tank, melee/range dps, and heal... Ya they can do everything pretty close for paly's too. You could probably run a raid with only druids and Paly's. I'd like to know when they're going to buff shadow priests so they can tank? Since we're all for making everyone be able to do everything. Hunters and Paly's now can regen mana for the raid the same as a shadow priest. It's crap, now I lost my only thing that made it worth while to bring me to a raid. I used to be a utility class helping the raid but now I left with only doing mediocre DPS. I started playing WoW a couple months before BC and I've NEVER seen an overall buff to the shadow tree only nerfs. Our damage didn't scale with everyone else's to compensate for HP increases. IMO priests can only heal now. Why don't they just delete the whole shadow tree?

When I read this original post, I got a mental image picture of a nerd behind a computer screen flexing. Sounds like a whole lot of looking for something to qq about with no real meat behind his/her argument. Coming from a guild that has cleared Kil'Jaeden, raids are not so composed of exactly what you need all the time. More or less its who you have on. Blizzard knows what they are doing. Their creative genius goes far beyond what your brain could ever achieve so let them do their thing and shut up.

Anonymous said...

oh boy,you are ignorant. In a 40 or 25 man, it just means u need 1 of each class, so that leaves the other options open, rather than having specific set groups for every spec. In the end its really the same, less hassle for the raid leader to set up = less stress for the nerd rage = faster raid setups = more productive. I dunno if increased game speed turns you off, as you seem to like wasting time, hence the fruitless post. No i lied the post had a lot of fruit.
