I'll write a review eventually, but I think the biggest selling point for Heart Gold / Soul silver is:
Starters: "Starter Pokémon have always been named as such by the fact that they are the Pokémon given to you at the start of the game. As such, the are four different sets of these starter Pokémon. Unlike Diamond, Pearl & Platinum however, Heart Gold & Soul Silver give you access to three out of these four possible sets of Pokémon. As such, you can only pick one of them in each set so you must choose wisely."
If I understand this correctly, the game allows access to three of the four sets of starter pokemon.
That is a lot of pokemon for one cartridge.
Also, the list of unobtainable pokemon for this game is quite short, compared to other games.
Also, God of War III is finally out. I bought the ultimate edition that comes in Pandora's Box (which, presumably you are not meant to open, requiring the purchase of an edition considerably less ultimate). The box is bigger than the average lunch box, such as the one Fallout 3 came in, made of plastic and is actually kind of cool.
The game itself immediately sets itself apart from the GoW clones that have been popping up lately by being steadfastly badass. Besides offering a more steady stream of "holy shit, that was fucking awesome" than its competitors, I had forgotten how much I enjoyed the fact that Kratos is often fighting bosses who are a bit more robust in action than monsters stuck in a room.
I mean, the most traditional of game bosses is more or less a guy in an empty room somewhere. The door closes behind the hero as he enters and they duke it out. Kratos is often fighting a single boss in several locations for a fair amount of time, while other fighting is going on around him.
This sort of fight gives a larger sense of scale, I think, versus the guy in the empty room. It presents Kratos' battle as one part of a larger battle. The most important part, sure, but not the entire thing. It shows that there is more to the world than just the player and the things the player pushes around and kills and I find it to be effective in making for a fight that is interesting to be a part of.
The QTEs have been changed for the better in that they flash their button prompts on the four sides of the screen corresponding to the four positions of the face buttons on the controller. Triangle flashes on the top, circle on the right and so-on. This eliminates both the need to remember which button is triangle and to actually look at the prompt to know what to press. Further, they have incorporated some QTEs as a part of the actual battle system. I've seen a guy start to charge, a prompt shows up on the screen, and success means throwing the guy into the wall while failure means you take a hit. It's essentially a different way to handle blocking, depending on context, and I kind of hope they include it in multiple places.
