Starcraft 2: NO LAN SUPPORT

Confirmation: STARCRAFT 2 WILL NOT SUPPORT LAN MULTIPLAYER

Blizzard just recently confirmed that there will be no LAN (local area networking) game mode in StarCraft 2. This was confirmed in a interview with Rob Pardo, senior VP of game design at Blizzard Entertainment. Rob Pardo stated:

“we don’t have any plans to support LAN,” he said and clarified “we will not support it.” The only multiplayer available will be on Battle.net.

Because FUCK YOU, that's why.

It really isn't a big deal, now that essentially everyone who cares about video games has a broadband connection. I only really ever play D2 on battle net. Even when playing D2 with someone in the same room, I still play with that person on battle.net.

I don't see why SC2 has to be any different.

They said that it has to do with the features they will offer through battle.net. So...yeah...ok... But I do not like the requirement of being online when it would be possible to play the same game without being online.

kyle - i don't think that is a good enough excuse for not including LAN.

the thing that Blizzard got about Diablo 2 / Starcraft / WoW is that they are fundamentally social games. i would of never played D2 as much as i did if it was not for playing it online and in LANs. Warcraft 3 failed because its online was shit.

but taking LAN out of the picture it kills an option that plays have come to expect in PC games.

I will be interested to see whether or not Diablo 3 has LAN support for two reasons. 1) Bizzard has began thinking of non-WoW video games from a console paradigm and 2) they are someone making money off multi-player.

they are either going to sell ads in the Battle.net or in-game ads. OR they are going to charge for online play.

either way - this seems like a shitty way to go about annoying your core audience.

I don't disagree with that at all.

"Warcraft 3 failed because its online was shit."

Incorrect. Warcraft 3 succeeded admirably. Great sales. Great reception. Great player base. Spawned a subtype of RTS, that revolutionized the genre (See DOTA).

Partially, incorrect. This speaks to what I mentioned earlier. Now that essentially any realistic PC gamer, and most console gamers, have broadband connections, we will see no fundamental difference from a practical aspect between the two. You can still have a LAN of D3 or SC2, you will just be required to play the games through a proxy on battle.net. This isn't terribly crazy, and makes sense from a Development standpoint. It simplifies cross platform multiplayer by using battle.net as a proxy.

These can totally be the case, but it is HIGHLY unlikely we will have to pay for online play. I can handle battle.net ads, and would find it totally reasonable for a free service. I also don't imagine Blizzard selling in game ads. Blizzard cares too much about their fabricated worlds to allow something like that to happen.
