Will Ferrell routinely strikes me as conceptually funny but, in practical terms, a thankless chore of a person to watch.

You know that thing where standup comedians claim to do funny things in public. Like, Mitch Hedberg saying that when he was in elevators, he'd react to the floors people chose. Being like, oh, 15th. Man, good luck.

Probably nobody ever does that and even if you did, it would probably just be kind of stupid, but conceptually, it makes for a pretty good joke.

Will Ferrell should not be allowed to sing Freebird on the last episode of the Tonight Show with Conan O'brien, but I can see how suggesting it would be a hoot.

yeah - Will Ferrell cant seem to stop mugging it up. He just seems to get in the way of his own shtick.

otherwise, that is a classy way to go out.

also, it cost $500,000 for them to play Lovely Rita for Tom Hank's walk out.

I disagree.. Ferrell totally CAN stop.. Look at Stranger than Fiction... which uses a modicum of mugging to sell the movie, but mostly gets by on Ferrell playing subtle.

If anything, Will goes to the mugging when others crack up / the writing breaks down.

And I HATE to defend Ferrell's act, because it's not my comedy.. but.. the actor? moves to that tool when others fail. Look at his Broadway One-Man Bush thing. It's far less mugging than you'd expect for a man whose popular career is built on it.
