I am not posting this [chat] from my iPad. Rather, I am posting it from my laptop while I count the money I have as a result of having not bought an iPad.
But, you may ask, how are you typing this without a touch screen keyboard or 3G wireless internet connection! Simple, I reply. I am using the regular keyboard on my laptop, and the broadband internet I've had for a while now.
I now invite you to ponder the merit of paying $499 for a computer which requires another computer for its setup.

The setup part is the part that really fucking bothers me.

They're an odd duck, and I want to see how use develops for them before I jump straight in with the mockery.
(mostly because it seems RIPE for mockery, and yet.. it seems like there's something of value there)

what i will say, PCWorld is reporting that it gets 140 hours of audio playback.
140 hours is a lot of hours.
That certainly makes it the largest ipod ever.

Think of it as a portable media reader.. for magazines and websites, short video, plus iPhone apps...

here is what it comes down to for me. The iPad, like any other gadget, is a tool. It is is useful for some people. Not for others. My MacBook Pro is now 4.5 years old. In the last 6 months it has really been showing its age. It gets about 30min of battery life, the screen is getting dim. it is slow to boot, show to shut down. I could replace the battery, but it was one of the very early MBPs that had the Sony batters which were recalled. Soon after that recall apple changed the battery. Apple no longer sells them, and nothing scares me more than a 3rd party battery that may catch on fire.
So, in a few months when i have a job and money, instead of getting a new laptop, i may get an ipad. since graduating the only thing i use my laptop for is fucking around on the internet while watching TV. My desktop computer is where I do any real work (photos, web stuff, writing). I could do some of that on an ipad. blogging and some web design could be really easy if someone made a text edit like Mars Edit. Mars Edit is AWESOME. I am writing this comment in it I type command-b and it drops the HTML around the highlighted text. Pared with a blue tooth keyboard i could do that sort of thing, and when i am watching TV and skimming RSS feeds, i could do the on-screen keyboard. I could have the best of both worlds.
But it is just a tool. I want to play with one see how it feels etc. It weigh 1.5lbs. Sarah's nook and my mom's kindle weigh about 1lbs less. that could be very fatiguing after a while. Needing second computer to set is up is kinda ridiculous. yes, it is a secondary computer, meant to go along with another base devic, but apple started doing this way back in the early ipod days when everything from the itunes store was locked down with DRM. they need to drop that asap.

It would be silly to deny that the iPad is a tool, as any other gadget is a tool. I am happy to place all gadgets within the same category.
The question is, I think, once we agree that all gadgets are tools, not to be assessed in terms of anything but their utility and cost, as this is how one assesses a tool, I fail to see how the iPad wins out in any gadget comparison.
My basic question is this: What can an iPad do which a similarly priced netbook cannot do?
The basic, 16 Gig, iPad is $500. Alright, so let's start shopping around to discern what else we could get with our $500. But, in addition to cost, we need to assess the utility of the tools. So, let's set some variables.
Let P be all features of the iPad. Can we find, for $500, a netbook the utility value of which can be articulated as as least P but, better, (P + Z), where Z is any feature the netbook has which the iPad lacks?
Or, to get more complicated, let P be all features of the iPad commonly shared by all other laptop / netbook computing devices (web browsing, wireless, internal storage) and A be all features unique to the iPad (can run iPad specific apps, is shiny). Then, we need discern if there is a netebook / laptop, within the same price range, which can do at least P, but also has features Z which would either offset the features A, or bla bla.
I think you get my point.
If we start talking about what these things are, and ignore their names, then I do not understand why one would be compelled to spend $500 for the basic 16GB iPad/Kindle+ as opposed to something with a keyboard which does not suck, can use java, can run multiple applications at once, and can be used without having to rely upon another computer.
If this were not "the iPad" and was rather "Microsoft's new Your-Mom-Sucks-Cock" I doubt that we would even be talking about it. Except insofar as we would probably ask "Why would Microsoft name a shitty Kindle ripoff the 'Your-Mom-Sucks-Cock'? God, Microsoft is full of idiots."
But when a guy in a turtle neck says "Man, you know how you like the iPhone? Well, imagine that, but bigger, and it's not a phone!" then people start jizzing themselves stupid.
Because if history has taught us anything it is that technology whores love bigger, bulkier, heavier gadgets with less features than previous versions.

The iPad is a tool. There is consensus on that.

Therefore, the iPad is not universally appropriate for all consumers. Your comparison to a netbook is only valid for you, as would be your question of what does the iPad do that a netbook doesn't. They're only valid questions within the context of your use. For Mikey's use, mostly as a web device/e-reader for casual use in the apt? The iPad is all the machine he needs, and it offers AT least two linked things a netbook doesn't. Novelty and promise of innovation.
Pretty much the same things the iPhone offered when THEY came out. What did the iPhone do that an old Palm or Handspring w/ a phone app couldn't do? Hmn?
