epistemology and ontology nothing to do with Schrodinger's thought experiment. Electrons do exist in a superposition in which they are both a wave and a particle at the same time. the act of observing said electron does collapse it into one or the other.

also, the cat is not actually both alive and dead. it is just both can be true, we just do not know which is true until we look.

its a thought experiment, taking an abstract idea (Quantum mechanics) and stating it in an easily understood way. science, which is mostly magic but its still super neat.

How do you know the status of a thing independent of observation?

If knowledge is founded upon empirical observation then how can knowledge be claimed of that which is not empirically observed?
