"Wiiitis" pronounced "wee-eye-tis"

Someone explain how that third "i" can make a different sound than the two before it.

Jay, I believe you have met my friend. This is English. English, may I introduce Jay.

Caleb said...

(Don't make specific mention of it, but you should be aware that English's development was stunned slightly for lack of a strong father figure.)

_J_ said...

English is no one's friend.

Watching them play Ikaruga is enjoyable.

Oh, spoiler alert, the link is about Ikaruga.

And Aeris dies.

Roscoe said...

Goddamnit. I need to get my White/Black on.

Fuck'n hell, I do NOT have chops anymore. Fucking Smash Bros. at all hours and Oblivion at all others makes it impossible to get some good gaming in.

Also, apropros of nothing in particular, I miss fiberglass splinters.

I hate to be the one to bring ruin to this shoddily constructed illusion you maintain...but you never had chops.

And Aeris dies.

So boss decided that he wants me to set up shipping information in the stupid program we use. Which is fine I guess. The problem is that I don't know what the fuck I'm doing and, more importantly, I don't care. Because fuckall of I want to understand UPS Ground Shipping Rate Tables.

So I'm setting this shit up and testing it and it's weird and unfamiliar and nonsense and boss person, after seeing my testing, comes over and tells me how I ought to do it and how the system ought to be constructed for testing. Apparently I was entering zip codes as 00400 or 00500 thinking that 00400 would trigger 47329 zip codes and 00500 would trigger 56312 zip codes because FUCK ALL IF I KNOW HOW ZIP CODES WORK.

But what I needed to do was have the codes as 40000 or 50000 and not 00400 or 00500. Which, sure, makes sense once one understands these things.

But given that I don't know what the fuck i'm doing and boss apparently knows what the fuck he's doing I'm still trying to figure out why the hell I have to do this.

4 months till grad school.

I'm not opposed to doing it; data entry is not terrible. And I'm not opposed to boss correcting me and telling me how to do things.

But boss knows what to do and doesn't bother to fucking tell me? That pisses me off.

Who the fuck comes up with these prices?

1 lb. $4.20
2 lbs. $4.27
3 lbs. $4.31
4 lbs. $4.43
5 lbs. $4.65
6 lbs. $4.80

By what formula do shipping prices increase?
1-2: +.07
2-3: +.04
3-4: +.12
4-5: +.22
5-6: +.15

NONE!

Deny not the transcendental calculuses of the great and magnanimous economics! Would you dare to make query of the amount of tea in all the Chinas? The Economics knows that even of which you are unable to concieve of an imagining. Bolster not yourself for your shipping needs are merely a drop in the tremendous ocean of the worldwide transportation and logistics schemes! Silent acceptance is yourrole!

i am sure there is a math reason for this. Like more weight takes engergy to move, which means more fule. Also heavy things are more likely hurt people's backs when lifting, and therefore increase health care costs.

_J_ said...

Sure, the heavier the thing the more energy and effort required to move it. But look at the prices.

1 lb. $4.20
2 lbs. $4.27
3 lbs. $4.31
4 lbs. $4.43
5 lbs. $4.65
6 lbs. $4.80

A 3 lb. package is $.04 more than a 2 lb. package. A 4 lb. package $.12 more than a 3 lb. package.

Given that the difference between each is a lb. how can it be the case that 2 to 3 is a change of $.04 and 3 to 4 is a change of $.12?

Presumably a pound of material costs $X to move. How would that X not be consistent?

Above 150 lbs. the price increase is $1.50 per pound. That makes sense. But why is it not universally +$X per lb.? Would it not make more sense to have a base price of, say, $5 and just add $1.50 per lb.?

The finch seethes. Oh, how the finch seethes.

_J_ said...

Peep?

Roscoe said...

Achewood thing... but also me thinking about your rage, and my eye-rolling at it. Having you know.. worked shipping... there's a lot of different things that go into how a thing gets shipped.. weight, dimensions, material, timing, etc.

Weight-cost ratios vary in part, becuase there's a rough calculus somewhere that says most items that weigh X are of roughly Y dimensions, take up Y space. Kinda like a 4 dimensional version of our shouting Spacial Geometry! when moving percussion gear. You've got all three dimensions, to fill, in order to maximize profits, but you ALSO have to do it while meeting transportation weight limits, etc.

The other thing that factors into this is Large Volume shippers versus low volume and non-industry shippers. Various industrial shipping deals have different rates worked out, along with pickup and drop off schedules.

I just passed 10,000 Gold on my Warlock.

Because I'm awesome.

The people with whom I work who are my age got a puppy. Today they brought the puppy into the office. The puppy made my hate go away.

Puppy!

It's so cute!

Golden Retriever puppies are for the win.

Indiana University profession Ted Castronova and his students created the MMO, which as the professor points out, was "no fun" and "failed."

I bet if Hanover made an MMO it would be awesome.

Unknown said...

Castronova is a very cool dude. He is the guy that calculated the gross national product of Narrath (the world of EverQuest). I wish I could have taken a class of his while I was at school, but alas, no.

_J_ said...

He is the guy that calculated the gross national product of Narrath (the world of EverQuest).

What an awesome thing to do.

Unknown said...

The scary thing is that at the time, the gross national product in real world currency made it the 77th richest nation in the world. Higher than China and some other countries I don't remember while just behind Russia.

_J_ said...

I wonder what WoW would be.

Unknown said...

WoW is much harder to do because of their aggressive stance towards gold selling. It is harder to gauge the worth of everything in the game, and then gauge the amount of wealth amassed. I'm not going to say it hasn't been done, or that someone isn't doing it, the road is just a more difficult one.

I'm playing FFVII again, this time for reals™. It was Crisis Core that got me into this, and no, I'm not taping my game because the VCR here isn't very good and because of what already exists on YouTube.

Bottom line: FFVII hell yes.

MA17 said...

Also, the arcade in the IMU has been gone for this entire academic year, and it's wearing on me. A few months ago I could go to the mall and play the Strikers 1945:Plus machine and be happy, but now even that is gone.

I don't know what to do!

(The reason it's gone is, apparently, the contract with the guy who rents the cabinets was up and the renegotiations were not going well and the cabs were pulled)

Unknown said...

You can blame that asshole John Bower who started managing the bowling center shortly before I quit for that.
