Happy Birthday to [chat]

June 18th was EOIAS's birthday. Soon we'll have to start weaning EOIAS off of breast milk and start it on solid food. I don't foresee that transition going too well.

Lord Ahune is a new boss in Slave Pens added when the Midsummer Fire Festival started.

It is a fun little fight.

gah.

this day is going to kill me.

so.. the Beer Tasting that I'd been waiting on Purvis to figure out? for a semester and a half?

the one we rescheduled to shoot for first weekend in October?

Just fell through. On her side.

GAH.

Alcohol has no magical properties. That fact impacts both sides of the debate.

Have a tea tasting, a coffee tasting. Have a cigar tasting.

The point of the events is to get students and faculty together at a social event so that they can find commonality with one another. The point of the events is to bring people together.

To fixate on the particulars of the event moreso than the act of bringing people together misses the point.

Roscoe said...

Microbrewed beer, however, DOES have an effect in getting the faculty out.

Mostly because unlike the tea tasting, and other events we tried, everyone, and I mean, everyone was immediately interested. I half suspect the tea tasting ran into a bit of a regularity problem by this year.

either way, I'm more frustrated by the ammount of time it took to get a flat out no.

Roscoe said...

.. I must say.. you've an odd fixation on this beer tasting as being.. somehow.. inappropriate, by the way.

Everytime it's mentioned, yeah, I'm having troubles getting it off the ground, but enthused about it...

and every time, you hit on the alcohol as if THAT was what I cared about. It's not the booze, Jay, it's the supplier. it's the quality, not the substance.

Roscoe said...

no one's online right now, and work has never fully kept my attention. With the blog and the net as slow as it is today, that means I get to brood about whatever irks me and fire away indiscriminately. Which, clearly, today, includes Carlin and the fallen through event.

So.. here's what I don't get. I know you're not a beer drinker. But I equally know that you FULLY appreiciate quality in a product, and that it's worth it to go out of your way to get that. I further know that YOU know I live to introduce others to things I like.

So what I'm not getting is how you seem to think I care about this becuase it's booze. I'm trying to understand where your bizzare little conservative streak comes from. "We didn't do that at Hanover, so why are you trying so hard" thing. Except.. you DID try this.. or.. Mikey did, at least.

I don't get it, Jay, and it's getting irksome. Or I'm getting irksome. hellfire. someone get me some ... CRAP.... I can't even remember the damn drug for senile agression now. and it's my damn wallpaper at home.

piss.

_J_ said...

I felt the same way about the wine tasting when we worked on that.

Hanover's alcohol policy may be moronic when you accept that alcohol is not a magical idocy tonic. But it's Hanover's policy and it's not that big of a deal. Alcohol is not required to survive at Hanover.

So when I see people trying to do wine tastings or beer tastings it seems as if the event is at least particually a mechanism by which one can poke the alcohol policy of the campus.

But the goal of the events as a concept is not to poke the college. The goal is to get students and faculty together. There are more things which do that than just alcoholic beverages.

Combine that with the social perception of wine and alcohol and it just bugs me. When I worked the doors for the wine tasting I always saw a few people who would be stuck up snobbish pricks throughout. Mikey or someone would explain how to smell the wine and the snobbish pricks would say "That's now how I learned how to smell it, noobs."

There's plenty of other things to draw people together. You want quality? Just buy quality anything. How about you buy some organic fruits and some Wal-Mart fruits, present them both, and let people taste test them? Then you can talk about the merits of organic farming. Or get some quality beef or fish. How about a sushi tasting?

Or forget consumption and just have some other sort of event. Quality movies, quality speakers, quality anything?

Hell, if you want to do a service to the campus community you need to have a Vodka tasting so that fuckheads learn to stop drinking Smirnoff and rather drink something good. But if that won't happen because of complications? Just do something else.

Roscoe said...

I'm not trying to poke ANYONE.

The mechanics for a wet event EXIST, and there are MANY, MANY alloted uses of that mechanic for each group.

2 open, and a nearly-unlimited number of closed events per semester. That's an assload of alcohol, all legitimately consumed on campus.

If anything, I'm or, rather,I was trying to use Hanover's own system, not to tweak it and poke it, but responsibly have alcohol, to possibly loosen not the standards, but the attitudes that spring up when people don't KNOW the standards.

now the question is do we do it as a closed event.. i.e. advertise a limited number of spaces, and force a list of guests, or take it off campus?

Because everyone's still far too interested, faculty wise... and not just teaching faculty...

I think I know what's irking me about aIl this.. the fact that you criticise, without actually knowing what we do and don't do.. we have a number of events..

Professors watching movies, hanging out listening to music, etc. Banta's watching of Brazil, Bate's Miller's Crossing night, Bettler and Skip coming over the night of the Gala to hang out and play guitar...

so it SEEMS like you're telling me to focus on areas whre things allready happen, and to forget the one that shows the most promise.. is all.

the issue's on my side, not yours. Your natural ability to make people HATE you just clouds it. Jerk.

Roscoe said...

man.. it's so dead around here, I want to get a torch and pitchfork to chase J around w/.

_J_ said...

" Your natural ability to make people HATE you just clouds it."

Don't knock it. That ability has not only served me well but will get me a job one day, damn it.

Can't faculty host events? If plenty of faculty want the event to happen couldn't take the lead? It might be more likely to happen if faculty want it than students.

Roscoe said...

Unlikely to happen... at least as an open to campus event.. in which case, why put it on faculty when it could be put on us just as well.

The problem is Sodexho's legal No.., not who wants it to happen...

For whatever reason, Sodexho isn't able to accept the BBC as a vendor... and I suspect this might be becuase of prior vendor agreements and exclusivity clauses..

_J_ said...

If your fight is with Sodexho you'll fail.

Reading about the Music Genome Project attributes taught me that "Extensive Vamping" does not mean what I thought it meant.

To break the monotony of bickering over the merits of beer tasting, I would just like to mention that Teenie and I finished the planning for our house this past weekend, and it will totally kick more ass than your current living quarters, to nyuh!

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith Tracklist

That's one big resounding "MEH!".

Though, if someone else wants to buy it I wouldn't mind playing Walk This Way.

Noteworthy songs not included?
-Jaded
-Don't Wanna Miss a Thing
-Janey Got a Gun
-Crazy Train

_J_ said...

@Kyle: If you manage to potty train Bowser and Kirby so that they no longer piss inside then could I have the honor of being the first to piss on the new carpet in the new house?

I'll totally help you move if you let me be the first to piss on your carpet.

Unknown said...

Ragdoll is a good one for GH but already exists on ghII right?

Unknown said...

If you can promise to piss on the carpet with odor-free piss.

Unknown said...

oh, and CRAZY TRAIN ISN'T BY AEROSMITH!! Those hacks couldn't write crazy train if their lives depended on it.

_J_ said...

I want Crazy Train!

Roscoe said...

There wasn't a FIGHT with anyone, J.

that's the point.

We were working with Sodexho, trying to get an answer. it came back negative.

We move on to other options.

Roscoe said...

Roscoe said...

wow.. so I just saw the GH: Aerosmith list.. and there's a LOT of non Aerosmith stuff.

which is.. only KINDA interesting.. becuase they're good songs.. but.. covered by someone who sounds like Aerosmith?

Meh?

Roscoe said...

I mean.. Sex Type Thing, Hard to Handle, Cat Scratch Fever?

Unknown said...

None of those are Aerosmith songs either!!! BLARG!

_J_ said...

"there's a LOT of non Aerosmith stuff"

It's 29/41 Aerosmith, 70.73% Aerosmith.

29.27% is not "a LOT". Unless you think Bush's 29% approval rating means that "a LOT" of Americans think he's doing a good job.

Unknown said...

the phrase "a lot" is relative. On a game entitled Guitar Hero: Aerosmith one would reasonably expect a Guitar Hero game with nothing but Aerosmith songs, especially considering the body of work that Aerosmith has produced over the decades. Anything more than one or two songs not by Aerosmith in my opinion would be a lot.

An example of relativity of the phrase "a lot":
winning in Soccer by 3 goals is winning by a lot. Winning in Basketball or American Football by 3 points is not a lot.

SERIOUSLY. ANYTHING. Like the competing theologies of the Marvel Universe..

_J_ said...

"especially considering the body of work that Aerosmith has produced over the decades."

That's what surprises me. 29/41 Aerosmith, 70.73% Aerosmith on an Aerosmith expansion is odd marketing.

The 317 existing Aerosmith fans? They want Aerosmith. The rest of humanity? They've no interest in a 70% Aerosmith Guitar Hero.

There's not enough non-Aerosmith to appeal to people who don't like Aerosmith, yet there seems to be...dare I say...too much non-Aerosmith for those 317 existing Aerosmith fans.

_J_ said...

"Someone ask me some minutae about comics!"

You are at work, which means you have access to wikipedia, which means that you'll just go to the wikipedia page for squirrel girl if I ask you about her.

I agree, the collection of songs on the Aerosmith version is horrible mutant compared to that it should or could be.

_J_ said...

Why do we want it to move?

The only utility I can see is that if a bird nests in a gap you could move the different floors to close the gap.

Except that's not so much "utility" as much as it is "mean" and "needless".

Unknown said...

We want it to move because it is cool. There are multiple buildings have moving floors and very cool, like the CN tower, the space needle, etc. This one takes it a step further and puts in multiple moving floors moving at different rates.

I'm extraordinarily curious how the stairs would work in such a building.

Roscoe said...

no stairs.

Batpoles.

CNN Headline reads:
"Firefighters take on 100s of wildfires"

Where, oh where, is Mr. Period when I need him most? Come on CNN, '100s' != 'hundreds'. Did you really need to sacrifice functionality of the phrase to save four characters? Did you really?

_J_ said...

"I'm extraordinarily curious how the stairs would work in such a building."

My assumption is that there would have to be some central core around which the floors rotate.

The stairs probably exist within that space. So all traffic up and down utilizes that same main area.

Which I assume would be a fire hazard.

Roscoe said...

If there aren't going to be batpoles, then I expect there to be NOTHING.

Getting from floor to floor would be like Die Hard.

_J_ said...

Batpoles don't enable a person to go up.

World of Warcraft Song coming to GH3.

1) I would have preferred "World of Warcraft is a Feeling" or "Crank dat Druid Boy".

2) I'm slowly beginning to hate Guitar Hero.

Unknown said...

1) Those fans would be so much more kick ass if they could operate at 1k rpms.

I think I will start a company called kick ass fans that creates the same fans Big Ass fans does, but hooks them up to a 250 hp engine as opposed to a 1 or 2 hp engine.

2) 100s refers to the 2nd century. So the firefighters were fighting fires from antiquity.

_J_ said...

Ran Zul'Aman last night. We got the first two timed chests and were 1% boss health away from getting the third. If we hadn't royally fucked up on that third boss we probably could have got all four timed chests. The goal is to start getting bear mounts soon.

It's not really a problem...but ZA is incredibly dependent on group composition, gear, and player abilities. It's one of the last "fun" things to do in WoW anymore.

Once I grind myself out on ZA I ought to be good to quit.

I a bit of lighthearted news An animal shelter in Michigan accidentally euthanized a dog.

This is my favorite part:

I'm ok with people buying the same game repeatedly. That's not unique to Nintendo.

If we finish at a reasonable time I could call you and we could watch the Two Towers rifftrax. I'll probably pick up some Vodka after work as well.
